This is a wetland in the middle of Kota Kinabalu town. Step in side the park and you'll think you've been transported out of a town.
The park is about 20 ~ 30 minutes from your hotel. Its quite a pleasant walk as the mangrove trees cover a good part of the wooden walkway. There is also a tower which provides a nice view of the park. Good for a couple of hours and quite educational for the children.
The Bird Sanctuary has an important natural function. Migratory birds converge here during the winter months to breed and feed before flying back to their original nesting places (The birds from your country will they be there? Find it out!). Egrets, herons and various other species of water birds can be seen here at dawn or in the early mornings when it is not too hot, or at dusk before the sun sets in the evening. Birds can also be seen wading in the shallow waters of the lagoon feeding on small fishes and frogs, or settling into their nests on mangrove branches by the water's edge to rest.
This is not a commercial park that crowded with peoples and full with shops that selling foods, drinks, souvenirs ... etc but a nature and peace bird heaven.
