The Malaysian Customs Department (“RMCD”) is imposing a Tourism Tax on guest at the sum of MYR 10 nett per room per night with effect from 1st September 2017. Please direct pay to tour guide.  Update: Malaysia government waive the tourism tax from 1 July 2020 until 30 Jun 2021.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1964 to help rehabilitate orangutans which had been orphaned. Just like a human baby, the orphaned young orangutan (which would normally live with its mother for 5-6 years) needs to be taught how to cope in the wild, while its health is carefully monitored during rehabilitation.

Visit the world’s smallest Sun Bear at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center at Sepilok, adjacent to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. The centre opened in 2014 and aims to increase public awareness and release back into the forest individuals which can be rehabilitated or are still “wild”.

The Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) is the gateway getting to know the uniqueness and importance of Borneo’s rainforests.

Situated 23 KM from Sandakan town and not too far from the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre (SOURC), the RDC’s main highlights are its exhibition halls, the Plant Discovery Garden, the Kapili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, environmental education programmes and a small lake for boat rides.

The RDC also gives visitors a chance to get intimate with nature through its Nature Experience programme which includes a guided walk to the Plant Discovery Garden, Rainforest Walk and indoor / outdoor activities.

Birdwatchers will be fascinated by this place as it has one of the rarest birds in Sabah, The Borneon Bristlehead and another 250 species of other birds like the Hornbills, Broadbills, Pittas and Kingfishers. As of 2009, RDC has also become the official venue for the annual Borneo Bird Festival which attracts the participation of birding enthusiasts from all over the world.

Gomantong Cave described by WWF as ’the best-managed edible birds’ nest cave in the world’, Gomantong Caves in the heartland of the Gomantong Rainforest Reserve have been the focus for birds’ nests for centuries.

Since the 13th century, Chinese traders have come to Sandakan in search of birds’ nests, a prized delicacy among the Chinese and found nearly 100 metres up on the ceilings of the Gomantong Caves. Harvesters put their lives on the line literally, climbing networks of rattan ladders and ropes to get to the nests. The risky nature of nest collecting has only helped made the commodity a pricey one.

The resident creatures of the caves include swiftlets (from which the nests are collected) and bats among others. Outside, other birds such as serpent eagles, bat hawks and kingfishers can be seen. You might even spot an orangutan or two. You will need to make prior arrangements for exploring the more challenging Simud Putih which calls for more serious caving.

Kinabatangan river is Sabah longest river that flows 560km.

Kinabatangan River, the longest  river of Borneo. The main reason for tourist to Bilit is to go cruising Kinabatangan river to watch wildlife. From Sandakan city, it is 2.5 hours drive to reach the Bilit.

You can for instance go for a walk in the area or maybe sit back and relax with a book on the porch. Late afternoon you'll sail off in search of wild animals. If you look up high and the trees, you'll see the monkeys looking down on you as they scurry about. Once the sun begins to set you'll sail back to the lodge for dinner and rest.
