Description

As the afternoon sun begins its descent over Kota Kinabalu, the city’s energy stays behind in the rearview mirror. The journey to Bongawan is a brief one -- just an hour’s drive, but as the urban landscape gives way to lush greenery, it feels like entering a different world entirely.

By 3:30 PM, the air smells of salt and earth. A warm welcome awaits at the jetty with a spread of local high tea. It’s a quiet moment to breathe, a prelude to the adventure ahead. There is something deeply grounding about sipping a drink while watching the river move at its own patient pace.

The real magic begins when the boat pushes off for the river cruise. Drifting through the intricate maze of mangroves, the world suddenly feels very alive. It’s a game of patience and observation. I found myself scanning the branches until, there they were—the iconic proboscis monkeys, with their distinct silhouettes, leaping through the canopy. Occasionally, a monitor lizard would glide through the water, or the stillness would be broken by the subtle ripple of a crocodile near the banks. It’s a humbling reminder that nature follows its own rhythm, and we are merely guests.

After a hearty local buffet dinner that feels like a home-cooked embrace, the timing is perfect for the transition to the coast.

Standing on the beach during low tide is an experience that words struggle to capture. This is the "Sky Mirror". As the water recedes, a thin, glass-like film remains on the sand, reflecting the sky with impossible clarity. Walking across it feels like stepping into a dream where the horizon has vanished. With the sunset painting the sky in bruises of purple, gold, and fire, every photo taken here feels like a work of art. It’s a moment of profound stillness -- just the vast sky, its perfect reflection, and the cooling breeze.

But the day has one final secret. As darkness settles, we return to the water. The mangroves, which were vibrant and green just hours ago, are now draped in shadows. Then, the first spark appears. Then another. Within minutes, the riverbanks are illuminated by thousands of fireflies, pulsing in a synchronized, silent rhythm. It’s as if the stars have descended from the sky to rest on the trees. Floating through this "guaranteed" light show is a surreal, cinematic experience that leaves you in a state of quiet wonder.

By the time the boat returns to the jetty at 7:30 PM, the soul feels lighter. The drive back to the city center is a time for reflection. This isn't just a tour; it’s a journey through the elements -- from the wild inhabitants of the river to the mirror-like sands of the beach, ending in a forest of tiny lights. It’s a reminder that even so close to the city, magic is waiting for those who know where to look.

No advance payment is required, simply pay cash in Ringgit-Malaysia to tour guide. However, you still need pay in full for any cancellation made 1 day prior to tour date.
